The Meaning of Life

In our text for this morning, Jesus is preaching a portion of what we now call the Sermon on the Mount to a ragtag bunch from the surrounding community, and in this text he called them, "the light of the world." By the way, in case you wondered, He includes us here. I think a "light" is a great metaphor for Christians, but what do you suppose He meant by calling us that? That we Christians are brighter than everyone else? Hardly. Maybe He meant that we should light the path for others so they don't stumble in the darkness. I think we're on to something with that kind of thinking! We'll follow up on this as we take a look at Matthew, Chapter 5, verses 13-16 (but especially on verses 14 through 16) and try to sort out what Jesus meant by calling us the light of the world. I hope you'll be especially open this morning to an important Word from God on who we Christians are called to be. (Permalink)
