Late One Night in a Jerusalem Diner

When the Bible says that God's ways are not our ways, we shake our heads in agreement. "Of course," we say. God is in all, above all, and in control of all that is-how could we ever get our minds securely around something like that? At the same time, we are often tempted to limit what we are willing believe about God due to our confidence in the few things that we do know about Him. In today's gospel lesson, Jesus raises his friend Lazarus from the grave. Surely that is something unprecedented. Surely that is something only God can do. And yet, almost immediately the resurrection of Lazarus sets in motion a plot-by the religious leaders-to end Jesus' life. Jesus does not conform to their religion or their politics so as far as they are concerned, he cannot be the Messiah they have been waiting for. (Permalink)
