The Ambidextrous Christian

There are lots of reasons not to go to church. Many of them are solid and thoughtful and honestly reflect where you and are right now. It would be easy for folks in church to stick up their noses at folks outside the church and dismiss them as being short-sighted and foolish. The problem with that approach is that it's not the approach Jesus took. Jesus had this knack for accepting people as they already were, investing himself in their lives in such a way that they were inspired to become more than who they'd already been. We think that makes pretty good sense. In fact, that's how most of us ended up in a relationship with Jesus ourselves. We may say, "Get Your Butt To Church," but what we really mean is consider giving our community of faith a shot. We're far from perfect, but as far as we're concerned that's the point. Perfection is never a pre-requisite for faith. In fact, if we were perfect what would we need God for? We're planning to spend a month of Sundays thinking out loud about why so many folks decide not to go to church. Maybe in that long list of reasons there is something to which we ought to listen and respond. (Permalink)
